Cameraland - About Us

It might be hard to believe that one of the Western Cape’s leading photographic stores did not start out soley dedicated to selling and distributing photographic equipment, but as a pharmacy in 1958.

As a young and innovative pharmacist, Gerald Shap opened a pharmacy in the CBD – on the same premises that the store continues to occupy today – in the previous quarters of a popular photo dealer of the time. Unbeknown to Gerald at the time, taking up the space on the corner of Long and Shortmarket streets would open the doors to his calling and subsequent birth of shap’s Cameraland.

From the time Shap’s Cameraland opened its doors, it started building a valued customer base that has seen many generations purchasing their equipment from the store.

The team at Shap’s Cameraland attributes the company’s success in the industry to a variety of reasons, such as valued and personal service, quality products and offering the best price and professional advise.

Through the years, Shap’s Cameraland has seen people coming to the store from all over the Western Cape, proving that it truly does have a winning formula.

Keeping up with industry trends by attending international conventions on photography and photographic equipment, Shap’s Cameraland has kept abreast of new technology developments in the industry.

Due to the growth of the company and its buying power Shap’s Cameraland acquired certain agencies and became a major distributor of leading photographic brands. The store sells a host of products, from the widest range of digital cameras (Canon, Sony, Pentax, Leica, Fuji, Samsung and many others), lenses to flash guns to video cameras , binculars and telescopes, as well as photographic accessories, including memory cards, tripods, gadget bags and more.

Products now also extend into multimedia and include Mp3 players, voice recorders, Usb flash drives, plasma TV’s and Lcd screens.

Noting what a major problem parking is in the CBD, Shap’s Cameraland developed the adjacent 10-storey building into parking garages, allowing its customers to enjoy safe and secure parking, as well as direct access to the store.

Shap’s Cameraland believes in constantly developing its services and offers free Saturday morning courses to customers who have purchased new camera and video cameras.

Store hours are Mondays to Fridays from 8am to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. Call Shaps Cameraland on 021-423 4150
